Rigged and ready for the 2016 charter season!
The 2016 bluefin commercial season has come to a close. Nick and Billon have once again done an outstanding job, landing the biggest fish of the season on Tuesday. It probably would have been a NC state record if we had caught it with a charter, but since we were commercial fishing, it’s not eligible. 669# dressed! The 2016 commercial Bluefin season is quickly coming to a close, and once again, Nick and Billon did have done an outstanding job. Of all the days we have spent together over the last few years, yesterday was one that I will be especially thankful for. It was Easter Sunday and we went fishing. My nephew Lucas came down to catch his first tuna with his buddy George. After getting blown out on Saturday, we made it out on Sunday and had some action. Within five minutes of setting out, we caught a doubleheader of shorts. Over the next couple of hours, we had two more double bites, each time connecting with one, only to pull the hook each time. We have been really fortunate this year, holding on to nearly all of our bites, but today was the exception. That’s why it’s called fishing and not catching! We still had a great day, and My brother Jeff and Lucas got to see what we do without having to tune into the National Geographic channel! Thanks Nick and Billon, excellent job once again!
We wrapped up shooting Wicked Tuna Outer Banks on Saturday with a helicopter shoot, and went right back to work on Sunday in less than ideal conditions. Check out Oregon Inlet We are open for charters, and the bluefin are here!
Happy New year from the Frenzy crew! We ran our last trip of the year yesterday and found a few blackfin, a yellowfin and a wahoo. With only one other boat fishing, we didn’t find the fish until after 11:30. We had plenty of bites, but it seemed we were using rubber hooks and pulled off more than we landed. We are! 2015 was a great year for the Frenzy crew. Our charter business kept us busy all year, and with the exception of a three week stretch in September, the weather allowed us to sail most all of our scheduled trips. In November, I put the boat in the shed to catch up on some maintenance and make a couple improvements, now we are ready to get back to work. You can see some of the work here. There have been a few bluefin caught in Morehead City, and we may be headed down that way in the coming weeks. If anyone is interested in trying to catch a monster bluefin, get in touch with me and we will give it a shot. I have the whole month of January blocked out to chase the fish, whether they are in Va Beach, Hatteras, Morehead, or, hopefully right here at Oregon Inlet, and will be available for charter wherever we end up. We had a chance to take an overnight trip last night. The weather was perfect, and I had a great report from the swordfish boats offshore. We left at noon, trolled for a few hours and caught a yellowfin. We set up, and within an hour, had a bite, and put our first sword on the deck. We fished the rest of the night, and ended up catching three fish from 50 -100 pounds.
We headed offshore with the Phideaux yesterday looking for some tuna, not quite what we expected, but we did catch a pair of yellowfin and a mahi!
